As the dark nights are drawing in, what better time to go on a London ghost walk. Whether you opt for an organised tour or create your own itinerary complete with spooky stories, there are plenty of ghosts in London’s West End. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
50 Berkeley Square.
Known as the most haunted house in London, 50 Berkley Square was built in the late 1700s and was once home to British Prime Minister George Canning. Today, the building houses Maggs Bros. Ltd. antiquarian book dealers and no haunted happenings have been reported since 1937.
Legend tells that a young woman threw herself from the top floor window after being abused by her uncle. She’s said to haunt the attic room, scaring people to death, and to date, it’s thought that two deaths have been attributed to the ghost.
53 Berkeley Square.
It’s said that if you look closely, the spirit of a 17th-century gentleman can be seen gazing out the window here, waiting for the return of his daughter who eloped and never came home.
Hotel Piccadilly, Room 537.
If you’re feeling particularly brave, you might want to spend a night in room 537 at the Hotel Piccadilly – it’s thought to be haunted by the ghost of a traveller who took his own life in the bathroom. Subsequent guests have reported being woken by things going bump in the night.
