For the lucky few, a spot of opera in Mayfair was just the ticket earlier this month. PopUp Opera, known for their talent as well as their somewhat small-scale performances, performed Mozart’s ‘Cosi fan tutte’ to an audience of just 25 in a Mayfair bar.
Accessible opera.
Formed in 2011 by soprano Clementine Lovell, the company’s aim is to open up the world of opera to new audiences, making it enjoyable and accessible to all. Past performances have taken place in some rather unusual locations, from candlelit caverns and garlic farms to underground tunnels! Provided there’s room for a set, all is well.
Something different.
Last week the firm descended on The Whip in Mayfair, a 1920s speakeasy bar with a cocktail list to die for. With an atmosphere akin to being bundled in a relative’s cosy living room, opera sung at full volume so up close and personal is most definitely an intimate and unforgettable experience, and audience participation was also on the menu.
Last week’s performance.
Sadly, for those who missed last week’s performance at The Whip, the troupe has now moved on to pastures greener, so you’ll need to head to their next venue to catch a performance. With their summer tour running until 31 July, this week you can catch them in Hackney Wick, Vauxhall and East Sussex. Tickets are selling fast, so you had better be quick!
